The new BMW 3-Series will be presented in March 2005. But since
internal BMW material leaked early September 2004, the official final shape
is public already, and BMW picked up the pace and meanwhile presented
the first teaser video of the new 3 Series! (see below).
The
new 3 Series will come as the sedan first, starting with
3 new petrol engines (2.0 litre 4-cylinder as the 320i, 2.5 litre and 3.0 litre
6-cylinder as 325i and 330i), and a 2.0 litre 4-cylinder diesel engine (320d).
The 2.0 litre 4-cylinder will replace the currently used small 6-cylinder and
will have 150 hp (max. torque 200Nm at 3600/min). The 3.0 litre will have around
260 hp (300Nm at 2500/min). The 3.0 litre engine will be new almost from ground up
(BMW's next generation 6-cylinder), featuring a composite magnesium/aluminium
crankcase, BMW's valvetronic, and direct fuel injection. It's a real masterpiece with the by
far best weight/power ratio and the highest power output per litre in its class!
Weighing in at just 161kg, the new engine is 7 percent lighter than its predecessor,
making it the world's lightest six-cylinder engine. Power output is up by 12 percent
to 260 hp, with fuel consumption down by 12 percent.
